CALAMUS (Acorus calamus) ~ Calamus in Hebrew is Kaneh (Latin: cane) and is an ingredient in the SHeMeN Tov (anointing oil) as noted in Exodus 30:23.  Also known as sweet cane or sweet flag, only the dried root was used in ancient times.  Anti-microbial, antibiotic, anti-oxidant, anti-spasmodic, anti-rheumatic, insecticide, diuretic, laxative, sedative, cephalic, circulatory, nervine, memory boosting, stimulant and tranquilizing.

CALAMUS (Acorus calamus) ~ Calamus in Hebrew is Kaneh (Latin: cane) and is an ingredient in the SHeMeN Tov (annointing oil) as noted in Exodus 30:23.  Also known as sweet cane or sweet flag, only the dried root was used in ancient times.   Calamus is a Chinese and Indian herbal tradition commonly used to restore health.  The essential oil is steam distillated from fresh or dried roots, with components of acorenone, alpha calacorene, alpha aselinene, beta gurjunene, beta asarone, calamendiol, calamusenone, camphone, iso shyobunine and shyobunone.  !!! Traditional aromatic and topical uses include:

~ Rheumatism and arthritis – helps to stimulate the nerves and increases the rate of blood circulation in the affected area and gives relief from the pain and swelling associated with rheumatism, arthritis, and gout.

~ Relaxes nervous spasms.

~ Acts as a natural anti-biotic to fight infections, both internal and external.

Calamus SHeMeN (essential oil) causes blood vessels to contract and reduce pressure on the cranial nerve, resulting with a numbing and tranquilizing effect on the brain and the nerves to help reduce the feeling of pain. This oil is also used for treatment of headaches, vertigo, and as a sedative.

This oil is best used primarily for inhaltion or diffusion.  Be sure to use a carrier oil if using topically and be sure to research any contraindications if taking medications.  Do NOT take internally as Calamus is considered toxic for such.  READ CAUTION BELOW!

Calamus blends well with SHeMeN (essential oils) of CEDARWOOD, CINNAMON BARK, CLARY SAGE, Labdanum, LAVENDER, MARJORAM, Olibanum, OREGANO, PATCHOULI, ROSEMARY, ROSEMARY, TEA TREE and YLANG YLANG.

!!! CAUTION:  Calamus contains a compound called asorone, which is toxic and considered carcinogenic. Also, it may have a narcotic effect and may cause convulsions and hallucinations if taken in higher doses.  Studies have shown that its oral ingestion can cause prolonged severe convulsions and tumors.  THEREFORE, do NOT ingest orally or use for internal purposes and PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD AVOID CALAMUS as it is an emmenagogue (increases menstrual flow, i.e., possible miscarriage or premature birth!
