Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) 

Manuka essential oil is becoming very popular due to its properties and use over other more expensive oils.  It helps repair cell tissue (including nerve and skin) promoting cell growth, much like Helichrysum italicum; but, at a fraction of the price!  It’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties are much akin to Tea Tree but is considered up to 20 times more powerful!  Think of Manuka essential oil as the Tea Tree BIG GUN.

Known as the Manuka Tree which is a small evergreen shrub belonging to the Myrtaceae family.  Most know this plant in reference to manuka honey which is made from its flowers and has health benefits.  Its essential oil is remarkable with properties akin to Tea Tree but is believed to be stronger in its similar properties and, perhaps, more varied in its uses.

Uses:  Topically for skin conditions including MRSA, ringworm, chronic sores, athlete’s foot, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, dandruff, rashes, burns, cracked skin, insect bites and stings, lice, nail infections, boils, blisters, and cold sores.  Other uses include for such conditions as rhinitis, rheumatic joints and stiff back and for reducing fever. 

Especially used by athletic individuals and during hot summers as a deodorant as it may aid to reduce body odor leaving a refreshing fragrance.

When desiring a remedy for burns, wounds, mature and aging skin, Manuka may be a promising replacement for the more costly essential oils of Helichrysum italicum and Sandalwood.  These essential oils contain cytophylactic properties which promote new cell growth.  Therefore, it’s being used to help scars and marks on the skin fade away while helping to protect wounds from potential infection. 

Other essential oils with cytophylactic properties include Frankincense, Lavender, Myrrh, Patchouli, Sandalwood and, of course, Helichrysum italicum.
